When our oldest son had a tearful visit at the doctor’s office, we discovered that reading a story about Dora the Explorer going to the doctor helped. At the next checkup, he remained calm because he knew what to expect. I share more about our experience in this post: How We Became a Family that Reads Together. We now use books to help our kids feel more comfortable when it comes to other medical visits, like going to the eye doctor or the dentist. Here are stories that can help your little one feel less fearful at their next appointment.

Say “Ahhh!” Dora Goes to the Doctor
Author: Phoebe Beinstein | Illustrator: A&J Studios
Follow Dora the Explorer on her way to the doctor’s office for a checkup. Learn what goes on in the waiting room and in the exam room. Kids will find the interactive dialogue in this story amusing. We inherited this book from family and I didn’t think Dora would resonate with my boys. It was the only doctor visit book we had at home, but it helped both my oldest son and, later, my youngest son have positive experiences at their appointments. It’s a story they request us to read over and over again!

Dora Goes to the Dentist
Author: Ellen Rosebrough | Illustrator: Robert Roper
Follow Dora the Explorer at her checkup at the dentist’s office. Then flip the book over and join her at the doctor’s office. This is a 2-in-1 book that shows kids there is nothing to worry about at these appointments. This version of Dora’s visit to the doctor is slightly different than the one mentioned above. The doctor is different and Dora looks much older too. My kids prefer the version we have at home, but it may be easier to find a copy of this one.

Maisy Goes to the Eye Doctor
Author: Lucy Cousins | Illustrator: Lucy Cousins
Maisy’s friend Ella is having trouble seeing the board at preschool, so they both go to the optometrist’s office to have their eyes tested. This is one of many books in ‘A Maisy First Experiences Book’ series. Its vibrant illustrations will surely make you feel like a visit to the eye doctor is a positive experience.

We’re always looking for medical visit books that resonate with our kids. Reading relevant stories beforehand will help kids feel more prepared when they face new or challenging experiences.
Have any of these books about doctor visits for kids helped your family? I’d love to hear about your experiences or other medical visit books that worked for your little ones in the comments below.
